Our Bed Time Routine

Friday, March 16, 2018

I have been looking forward to Fletcher having a good schedule since he was born. It took us about 4-5 months but we got it down and it's made a huge difference in the way he sleeps. With this routine he has been sleeping 9-12 Hours! Now of course we have had a few nights that weren't the way i'd prefer, but we can blame teething for that. His first tooth is almost through! Anyway, I thought i'd share with you our bed time routine and what helped us establish that!

So I must start this out by saying this is not exactly how it is every single night. Sometimes we will skip a step because we visit family on the weekends and well, life. Okay now lets get started..

After dinner, depending on the time, we start with his bath. We prefer to begin his bath after dinner and about an hour before we put him down to sleep for the night. Baths have always seemed to wake up him rather then calm him down right away. If it's still too early we will play with him until it's about that hour mark.

For his bath we don't use his shampoo/body every single wash. We try to only use it every other bath or every two baths depending how bad he needs it. He has eczema and too much wash can dry him out. Since we do baby led weaning he gets super messy but the water does a good enough job of getting him clean. Our favorite product is the Shea Moisture Baby Wash and Shampoo. It scores great on the Think Dirty app and smells amazing! We switched from washcloths to this Frida Baby Bath Brush. It's great for dry skin and even works for cradle cap. More hygienic too! We also love our Skip Hop Tub because it covers all stages. Burt's Bees Baby Towels are definitely our favorite. They have washed the best and are super soft. I also love that they're organic cotton, great for eczema.

After our bath we always make sure to let him tire himself out. Our favorite way has been with our Dock-A-Tot Grand. (You can see my post about the Dock-A-Tot here) We put toys in there and he really enjoys it. During this time we will read a book if he's into it as well. He is getting more into books which has been so much fun.

^^My personal favorite is "I Want My Hat Back" by Jon Klassen. My husband and I read it together and use different voices for the characters. I think he will really enjoy even more when he's older too.

After he plays for a good 20 minutes give or take a little, we dim the lights in his room. I then apply his lotion while my husband fills his humidifier and turns on the sound machine. Our favorite cream for his eczema has been from the same brand as his shampoo and wash. It has better ingredients than some more common eczema products and clears his skin so quickly! Sometimes we will add a drop of lavender to his humidifier. It doubles as a diffuser and can be purchased here. I feel like the lavender soothes and calms him down.

We then put his sleep suit on. We have been using the Baby Merlins Magic Sleepsuit since he was about 3 months and it has made a HUGE difference for us. It's been great for transitioning out of swaddles and into his crib. As I have mentioned in previous posts, he still has a pretty bad startle reflex. This suit is made from breathable cotton which is also better for his eczema. I don't have to worry about him over heating (it looks hotter than it actually is) because the hands and feet are open which allow for his body to regulate temperature/allow air flow. I either put him in the suit just in a diaper or a onesie depending what temperature his room is. After putting him in his sleep suit I nurse him in our rocking chair and place him in his crib. Sometimes he instantly falls asleep and sometimes he cries for a few minutes. He sleeps for a good 9-12 hours though which has been amazing! His monitor is something we bought about 2 months ago and I am so glad I went with this one! It is the Infant Optics DXR-8 and you can get it here. One of my favorite features is the temperature along with the remote pan, tilt, and zoom. The battery life is also really nice. Highly recommend!

After establishing a good relationship with the sleep suit (we started with naps first to get him used to both his crib and the suit)  I decided to team up and give one lucky baby a free sleep suit of their parents choice! Head on over to my Instagram to enter! Giveaway will end Sunday March 15, 2018.

*Baby Merlins Magic Sleepsuit is to be used for back laying only. It is to be used in baby's crib and not in co sleepers or rocknplays. If you have any questions be sure to check out the FAQ on their website!

Thanks so much for reading all about our bed time routine! I have a fun Easter post for you all next week! Have a great weekend!
